LOCAL SHOPS

  • Spar in Loring Road Salcombe. Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, walk up the hill & left onto a stairway after 30 or so meters. Climb to the top of the path, straight on into a track then straight on (across St Dunstans Road) into Loring Road and it's immediately on your right. 4 minutes’ walk.

  • Coop Salcombe.  Turn left onto Knowle Road, right onto Coronation Road - right and immediately left at the bottom of Coronation Road takes you to the Coop.  4 minutes' walk.

  • Butcher, Fish Shop and Farm Shop is next to the garage near the top of Onslow Road. Turn right out of the back gate, walk to the top of the hill and turn right; these shops are on your left.

  • Ashby's - just outside Salcombe, on the Malborough Road.  1.5 miles' drive.

  • Tesco Kingsbridge TQ7 1QN. 6 miles’ drive.

  • Morrisons Kingsbridge TQ7 1TP. 6 miles’ drive.

Directions for Fore Street: Turn right out of front gate onto Knowle Road, left onto Onslow Road, continue onto Church Street, right at bottom of the hill onto Fore Street (or left for Fortescue). 8 minute’s walk.

 

Directions for Gould Road: Turn left out of front gate onto Knowle Road, first right into Coronation Street, first right into Shadycombe Road, first left into Gould Road then the Crab Shed is to your right at the back of the car park by the estuary. 10 minutes walk.

 

Directions for North Sands: Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, first left into St Dunstans Road, all the way to the end and then straight on into Sandhills Road: sharp turn to the right, sharp turn to the left and then leave Sandhills Road onto a footpath on the next corner, right at end of footpath leading to Winking Prawn. 20 minutes’ walk.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES​

 

BEACHES

  • North Sands beach. Dog friendly. Nice café. Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, first left into St Dunstans Road, all the way to the end and then straight on into Sandhills Road: sharp turn to the right, sharp turn to the left and then leave Sandhills Road onto a footpath on the next corner, which footpath leads to the beach! 20 minutes’ walk.

  • East Portlemouth and beaches on east side of estuary. Turn left out of the back gate (down the hill) onto Onslow Road and walk into town. Turn right along Fore Street (past the shops) and left at the Ferry Inn and down the steps to the ferry landing stage. At low tide walk along the beach to any of a number of beaches. At high tide from the ferry ascend to the road and turn right onto it, following the road to Mill Bay: here there is an excellent beach and a summer café.

  • Hope Cove beach. 15 minutes by car. Take road towards Malborough and turn left then fork right in Malborough village. Or see BUS section below.

DOG WALKS (WITHOUT DRIVING)

  • Footpath & small roads to Snape Point:- Turn left out of front gate onto Knowle Road, first right into Coronation Street, straight on into Croft Road which becomes a foot path. Continue to Lower Batson village, then follow the road round to the right up the hill alongside the estuary until the dead end, when you take a footpath to the left up through National Trust Land to Snaps Point.

  • Mostly footpaths to North Sands (muddy in wet weather):- Turn left out of front gate onto Knowle Road, road bends right then left onto Bonfire Hill. At T-junction turn right briefly onto Main Road then left at footpath sign. Cross another footpath (right then left turn). Footpath leads to the right through a former farm yard. Then left onto footpath that leads down to North Sands (dog friendly).

  • On roads to North Sands:- Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, first left into St Dunstans Road, all the way to the end and then straight on into Sandhills Road: sharp turn to the right, sharp turn to the left and then leave Sandhills Road onto a footpath on the next corner, right at end of footpath leading to North Sands.

  • Via ferry to Gara Rock:- Turn left out of the back gate (down the hill) onto Onslow Road and walk into town. Turn right along Fore Street (past the shops) and left at the Ferry Inn and down the steps to the ferry landing stage (or in winter left at the Victoria Inn onto the jetty). Take the foot ferry to East Portlemouth. Ascend to the road and turn right onto it, following the road to Mill Bay (National Trust). Follow the coast footpath, keeping the sea to your right. At the major fork in the footpath, bear left to the upper footpath. Continue for a mile or so to the Gara Rock Hotel (where they serve an excellent lunch). Return as you came, or for an easier return walk along the only road out of the hotel until you see a footpath to Mill bay signed to the left: this is a short cut back to Mill Bay.

  • Local circular walk through the wood:- Turn left out of front gate onto Knowle Road, first right into Coronation Street. Turn left into Forster Road. Near the end of this cul de sac turn right onto the marked Public Footpath. At the end of the footpath, turn left onto the roadway (which is Shadycombe Road), continuing until you see steps on your left. Climb the steps onto the footpath at the top. Continue straight along the footpath until you reach a tarmac area outside the cemetery. Turn left onto Bonfire Hill. Continue through this road’s two hairpin turns and then bear left: proceeding straight into Knowle Road. The steps to the house are on your right.

PLAYGROUND

Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, first left into St Dunstans Road. Continue up the hill until you see the playground on the right. 10 minutes walk.

​

SURFING

Very much dependent on the wave conditions.

Bantham Beach is the best surfing beach in South Devon. 9 miles away; 20 minutes by car. Take road towards Kingsbridge but fork left towards Plymouth. Bantham is a tuning to the left. (The turning opposite, towards Churchstow, is where the surf hire shop is located; see below.)

Or when the surf is well up, you can surf on North Sands beach (see “beaches” above).

PADDLE BOARDING
Paddleboard in the harbour or from North Sands or Hope Cove beaches (see “beaches”). Lessons at Crabshell, Kingsbridge. 01548 852345.

SWIMMING POOL

Salcombe Swimming Pool (outdoor, June-end-August). Onslow Road TQ8 8AG. 07746 248187. Turn right out of the back gate (up the hill) onto Onslow Road, and the swimming pool is on the right opposite St Dunstan’s Road (co-located with a school).

GOLF

 

TENNIS

Tennis can be played at Thurlestone Golf Club is 6 miles away, 15 minutes drive. Take road towards Malborough go on in the direction of Kingsbridge but take a side turning left marked for South Milton. This road leads to Thurlestone Golf Club.
